NLX High Speed Rail Grade Crossing Study

Commissioned by MnDOT, Rani Engineering recently finished a study on highway-railroad grade crossings along a 155-mile corridor for the Northern Lights Express (NLX) project.

Professional services included:

  • Analyzing each of the 169 grade crossings along the proposed NLX corridor in order to recommend warning devices for every location.
  • Performing site visits documenting the characteristics of each crossing.
  • Developing a decision tree accounting for several factors including exposure index, design speed, adjacent property type, community considerations, queuing potential, vehicle and traffic type, roadway geometry and profiles, and potential rerouting of roadways in order to evaluate alternatives.
  • Applying the decision tree to identify recommended warning devices at each crossing.
  • Identifying critical crossings where the roadway has a humped profile exceeding current design guidelines. Potential profile adjustments were recommended to bring roadway profiles up to AREMA and MnDOT standards.
  • Conducting a one-day workshop with MnDOT staff to present the findings and spur discussion on future policy considerations.
  • Summarizing all findings in a technical report.
