 Site Development

Project Challenge

The Whipple Federal Building, south of downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, was officially dedicated in 1969. Building tenants include Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, various agencies within the Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security. Surpassing 40 years of age in 2009, the building was selected for a $115 Million “green” upgrade, including an 800-well geothermal system, modernized interior and site improvements.

Rani Engineering performed the initial site survey, which included the subcontracting of a utility-locate firm to locate all private utilities on the site. Close coordination with Gopher State One Call was also required to ensure the design team knew as much as possible about utilities on the more than 150-year-old site. Rani also worked on construction staking on the project for site improvements, utilities, geothermal wells and new buildings.

Rani Engineering Solution

Rani Engineering provided survey services that were necessary for site design and construction. Professional services included:

  • Completed boundary survey that included review of documents dating to 1851
  • Performed full topographic and utility survey of the site and surrounding roadways
  • Marked geothermal well locations and completed as-built of wells and piping locations for future maintenance
  • Staked site improvements for construction by Ryan Companies and various subcontractors
  • Completed as-builts of utilities at the site per project specifications
